Initially coming in for apartment "2046," Chow is disgruntled when he finds out that the apartment was previously rented out before his arrival. He could only settle for No. 2047 if he wanted to finish his novel in due time. Chow first meets the owner of 2046 - a seductively beautiful woman all dressed in black (Gong Li). Not sure why, Chow begins spending his days voyeuristically, checking out the people who wander in and around the mysterious room. His objects of attention are various stunningly-attractive characters, many of whom are falling in and out of love. The landlord's daughter, Wang Jing Wen (Faye Wong), is in love with a Japanese man (Takuya Kimura), but her father disapproves of their relationship. 2046's previous tenant Lulu (Carina Lau) disappeared mysteriously one day, and the latest dweller of 2046, Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi) is an elegant and seemingly stuck up call girl. His obsession with the mysterious room finally comes head on as he befriends Bai Ling . . .
